Welcome to our very first blog post! My name is Sarah, and I am the owner of Lotus. I practice hair Tues-Sat at the salon. I plan on blogging frequently about recent hair that we’ve done for people, events we have planned, as well as posting tricks and tips for greener & non-toxic living.
I’m so glad you found your way to our website and are interested in learning more about what it means to live more consciously, both for the health of the planet and the health of you and/or your family. I started learning about this topic mostly after I got pregnant with my daughter 8 years ago. There were many recommendations and warnings people and books alike were making as to what to avoid when pregnant such as toxic cleaning products, certain foods, personal care items with toxic ingredients… It all seemed so overwhelming, but I was intrigued. I started doing some research on some of the ingredients in these products and the potential dangers of using them for both the mother and the fetus. I continued slowly replacing these items in my home with safer alternatives- and greener alternatives at that! Anything that’s toxic to you and I will likely be toxic to our planet when its washed down the drain, thrown in a landfill, etc.
Fast forward a few years and I was working as nutrition assistant at a local hospital. I was growing bored sitting at a desk, and wondering what kind of career I wanted to have. I was a single parent, and I knew I needed to provide for my daughter as well as do something that made an impact on people, and something that fueled my creative side. On a total whim, I made an appointment to meet with the admissions department at a cosmetology school. I ended up applying that day, and started school.
One thing I immediately noticed about the cosmetology industry was how stinky it was from all of the toxic ingredients commonly found in products and color. Some of the effects of these ingredients are pretty alarming- both in the short term and long term. Endocrine disruptors, cancer causers, neurotoxins… Not to mention all of the waste! Foils, plastic, over packaging, etc. I knew when I graduated I wanted to look for a holistic/organic salon to work at, both for my health and for the health of my clients and my planet. I graduated and started working at a salon in the White Mountains. I learned a lot there; what I wanted, what I didn’t want. After a few years, it was time for me to do what I know I was born to do all along: Open a holistic salon.
What is a holistic salon? A holistic salon is a more thoughtful approach to the salon; from what we use for products, to how it comes packaged, and how we give back to the community. It’s about offering a more intimate experience for our guests, rather than a busy, stressful, rushed experience. It’s about using products and sourcing companies that are forward thinking, and always looking to replace common toxic ingredients in hair color and products with something safer. It’s about helping a person feel beautiful and confident again after her hair grows back from having cancer. It’s about a biodynamic farm in the hills of Bologna, Italy where our product ingredients start. It’s about health. It’s about our earth. It’s about not having a migraine anymore when I leave work from stress and ingredients in products that are toxic. I will not sacrifice my health for my beauty, or for my career and I believe that you don’t have to either. That’s my mission at Lotus. To preserve our earth, to set an example and make a statement to other business owners and individuals alike for how we can make an impact, however big or small.
I thank you for reading my first blog, and I hope you have a better idea of my mission behind Lotus. Check back in for more blogs in the future, and in the meantime- here’s a video the MWVEC put together about Lotus. (P.s. If you’re an aspiring business owner, or current business owner in the Mount Washington Valley, you should really see what MWVEC is all about. They’ve been invaluable to me!)
